Receives $3,000 Donation
January 15, 2007
(GIDDINGS, TEXAS) A $3,000 donation by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative will put the Somerville Area Assistance Ministries (SAAM) closer to their goal of building a new facility to house their organization. According to Director, Tinka Murray, “Our present location is very small and inadequate and we need desperately to have more space. We currently have 533 client files (each file representing a family) and our outreach to the surrounding area is amazing.”
SAAM was organized in 1996, by the Somerville area churches in an attempt to provide one central location for people in need to come get help. In 1997, a house located on Second Street was leased, renovated and prepared as a food pantry and resale shop. In addition to helping people meet their basic needs, SAAM has been instrumental in unifying the efforts and relationships of the local churches in the Somerville area. SAAM is staffed entirely by volunteers and is funded by donations and funds generated from the very inexpensive resale shop. For ten years SAAM has faithfully served those in need in the Somerville area, and this year a new facility is being built to enable the organization to continue their assistance efforts. |
