(GIDDINGS, TEXAS) Deadlines are approaching for high-school students within Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative's service area who want to apply for either the co-op's Scholarships of Excellence program or Government Youth Tour sponsorship.

Now in its ninth year, Bluebonnet's Scholarship of Excellence program offers selected children of cooperative members $4,000 toward their college education - a $1,000 college scholarship every year for four years to graduating seniors who plan to pursue an academic degree at a state university, junior college or technical school and $3,000 toward a student's college education that pursues a trade and technical degree. To be eligible for a Scholarship of Excellence, a student must:

  • be a graduating senior at a high school within Bluebonnet's service territory;
  • live in the home of a parent or legal guardian who is a full-time resident and an active Bluebonnet member;
  • have applied for admission as a full-time student at a university, college, junior college or trade school; and
  • provide an original high-school transcript with class size and a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Scholarship applications are available at all Bluebonnet Customer Service Centers, through area high-school counselors or at www.bluebonnetelectric.coop . Completed applications must be submitted to Bluebonnet no later than February 3, 2006 .

Bluebonnet is also accepting applications for Government Youth Tour sponsorships, in which Bluebonnet sponsors two Central Texas high-school students on a one-week exploration of Washington, D.C., all expenses paid.

Bluebonnet offers the opportunity to all 10-, 11- and 12th-graders attending schools within the cooperative's service territory, whose parent or legal guardian is an active co-op member. Bluebonnet covers all transportation, lodging and meal expenses for its sponsored students.

Sponsorships are awarded based upon a written themed essay. Students interested in applying for a sponsorship can print out an application at www.bluebonnetelectric.coop . Completed applications must be submitted with two letters of recommendation to Bluebonnet no later than January 31, 2006 .
