Bluebonnet Teaches Caldwell Intermediate Students the Power of Power

Fourth and fifth graders learn how electricity works and how to be safe around it

January 17, 2006

(GIDDINGS, TEXAS) Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative recently helped Caldwell Intermediate School students learn just how powerful electric power can be. Through the cooperative's "Electric Junction" safety program, Caldwell Intermediate fourth and fifth graders were given a strong visual demonstration of the basic scientific and practical principles of electricity.

"Safety is a core value for Bluebonnet," said Bluebonnet Community Representative Beverly Lee. "We're proud to help students within our service area better understand electricity so that they can help prevent electrical and power-line accidents."

The presentation was made by Beverly Lee, Randall Bownds and Heith Siegmund, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative linemen. Together, they taught about 300 children how electricity gets to their homes and schools from the power plant, as well as important safety tips. The students also examined the equipment linemen use and participated in a question-and-answer session with their visitors.

Additionally, Beverly Lee told the children about Bluebonnet's "Rural Crime Watch" program, which urges employees in the field to report suspicious activity they might see while working in the community. "Whenever kids see the "Rural Crime Watch" logo on the side of a Bluebonnet vehicle, they can know that it's safe to come to us for help," explained Lee.

Bluebonnet has also done presentations in Dime Box and Giddings.
