Government-In-Action Youth Tour Winners Announced

Bluebonnet Continues a Proud Tradition of Sending Youth to D.C.

March 29, 2006

(GIDDINGS, TX) Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative is proud to announce the winners of this year’s Government-In-Action Youth Tour (GYT). Two winners and one runner up were chosen to represent Bluebonnet on the basis of their outstanding essays – Of all the political leaders in our nation, past or present, who has influenced you most? This year’s winners are Kari Galipp and Douglas Dawson, Jr. Kari is a sophomore at Giddings High School and the daughter of Wayne and Melissa Galipp. Douglas is a senior at Brenham Christian Academy and the son of Douglas Dawson, Sr. and Greschen Yount. Stormie Whitley is this year’s alternate, a senior at Giddings High School, she is the daughter of Jim and Janet Whitley. “We are proud to continue this long tradition of sending young leaders from our community to Washington D.C. to learn how government works,” said Mark Rose, General Manager/ CEO. The two winners will spend one week in June in Washington, D.C., where they will join other GYT participants from around the country to visit with lawmakers, observe legislative sessions and visit D.C. landmarks. Former President Lyndon Johnson inspired the development of GYT when, as a senator, he addressed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s annual meeting in Chicago in 1957 and urged the group to send young people to D.C. to “see what the flag stands for and represents.” Since then, Bluebonnet has proudly sent youth from its service territory to D.C. every year to participate in this program. By sending over 130 young people to D.C. over the last 65 years to participate in GYT, Bluebonnet has helped in growing leaders from this area. Congratulations to these three outstanding young people.
